Mors Principium Est (Latin for “death is the beginning”) is a Finnish melodic death metal band formed in 1999. They are a heavy hitting melodic death metal band from Finland. We were able to get in touch with Ville, frontman of MPE. Here is what he has to say.
With Kevin Verlay being your newest guitarist and Andy Gillon having had a few years to establish himself into the group, how is MPE currently feeling about the new lineup? In what ways have you grown stronger as a band?
We feel that we have the best lineup we ever had. I think we have grown stronger in every way. I mean, we are better live,
the chemistry between the band members is really good. Everything just seem to work ok with this lineup. 🙂 At some point we were a bit worried about the constant lineup changes, but it seems that in the end it was all worth it.
Do some of the members lives far away from each other? How do you overcome the obstacle of distance when wanting to discuss things as a group?
Well YEAH! 😀 Andy lives in UK, Kevin lives in France and the rest of us live in Finland. So you could say there is a bit distance between. 😀 hah hah We never had any issue that we would have really needed to talk something face to face. Nowadays you have skype, group emails, WhatsApp etc so it pretty easy to have a group conversation. Off course it would be easier and faster if we all would sit in the same table, but we get the job done like this also. 🙂 When The Dawn of the 5th Era released it was under AFM Records who have lots of impressive bands under their wing: Danzig, Elvenking, Fear Factory, Graveworm, Soil, UDO, and many more.
Tell us how working with AFM Records has helped you reach the next level as a band?
Umm, I think the same way as working with any other, not huge, label would have helped us. 😀 They promoted the band and the albums, they gave us money for the music video. Nothing else comes to mind. I don’t think that just the word “AFM Records” did anything for us.
You have a music video for “The Monster In Me”, first music video in the band’s career!
What is the reason behind picking this song as your first ever music video?
Will the fans expect any other music videos from this album?
It is quite simple reason, actually. 🙂 We had to decide what song we would use and the length on this one was one of the shortest ones and we think that maybe it had the most “traditional” MPE sound from the songs we had on “Dawn of the…” album. Also, it is kinda easy listening song. Those are the reasons why we chose that song. 🙂 It is not my favourite song on the album, but also I think it works ok as the video song.
What would be the perfect tour for you? Which bands would you like to tour with?
Well, it depends in sooo many things. Everything should be working ok and taken care of. We should not need to worry about anything else than playing. With these elements, basicly anything could be a perfect tour. But, lets say that if we do not need to worry about anything else than playing, maybe North American tour would be the one we would like to do the most. 🙂 I am a big USA fan so at least to me it would be the best place to tour. 🙂 And also, maybe it does not look like it, but it seems that we have a pretty good and strong following in USA.
There’s so many good bands that we could (musically thinking) and would like to tour with, but I am just gonna wing it and say Hypocrisy, The Black Dahlia Murder and Dark Tranquillity. Personally I would LOVE to tour with the Ghost (Ghost B.C. in USA) as I am a huge fan. Would be awesome to see them play every day!
MPE is currently working on their 6th studio album!
What’s the writing process for you guys like?
Now, when working with Andy, the process is that Andy starts to write riffs and song parts, he then sends them to me and then I tell him what I think about them and if there is something I would like him to redo or delete. Then, after some time when we feel the music has been done, we, mainly I, start to focus on the vocal parts and lyrics. This is how we did the last 2 albums and this is how we are working on the new album. 🙂 Maybe not the best or easiest way to do things, but I would like to repeat myself and say we get the job done like this also. 😀
What direction will the new album be taking?
It seems that the new album MIGHT be a bit more mid-tempo than the previous, but then again, it might not. 😀 hah hah It is hard to say at the moment because we do not have all the songs completed yet. One thing is for sure though, it will be much more orchestral/epic, in my opinion. We will not re-invent the wheel with this album, but there will be some new stuff. 🙂 Well, actually, maybe not new stuff, but something we have not used that much, or if we have, then this time we make it bigger than ever before! 😀 hah hah
Can the fans expect a studio diary like you did for “The Dawn…”
I think yeah, most likely we will have another “Andy show” coming. 😀 hah hah
Any upcoming tours or news you will like to share with the fans? Final words?
Well, we have our first Spanish tour coming up at november and then maybe, MAYBE, at the first half of 2016, we might have another short Japan tour coming and then, like we already talked about, we are writing our new album.
